Want to participate?

Undergraduate researchers are vital to successful SIL research. They are particularly essential for the high productivity of the lab. Tens of thousands of ice core and precipitation samples are acquired, stored, pipetted, and prepared for analyses every year by our dedicated team. Undergraduates are registered for degree programs in an appropriate department and college.

Our undergraduates often receive financial support for their work through research grants administered by INSTAAR. Additional programs may offer support. These programs are sponsored by INSTAAR, the university, industry (e.g., Mobil), and agencies such as the National Science Foundation and are designed to encourage undergraduate participation in research. They include SURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Program), SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships), SMART (Summer Minority Access Research Training), UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunities), UMP (University Mentoring Program), and REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates).

Undergraduate research opportunities may lead to Honors Theses and internships. These programs have contributed greatly to the feasibility of including undergraduates in SIL research and to encouraging undergraduate students to continue to graduate degrees.

Prospective undergraduate student researchers should contact us. Qualifications vary depending on the help needed. Although most of our undergraduate researchers are juniors and seniors with backgrounds in Earth science, chemistry, physics, or biology, we encourage other students to contact us.
